Vacuum insulation panels – microtechnology is the key to innovation

The core structure responsible for the highly efficient insulating effect of our vacuum insulation panels is an insert based on highly dispersed silica. There is only point contact between the spherical microporous particles. This substantially reduces thermal conduction due to contact between solid particles. In addition, the micropores minimize thermal transmission by convection. Specially developed infrared opacifiers also reduce heat transport processes by absorption and reflection of radiation.

The already outstanding insulation properties of the microporous insert can be further enhanced by the use of vacuum technology. In this process, the VACUPOR® inserts are encapsulated in multilayer barrier films under vacuum in a specially patented process. The evacuation of the material completely prevents thermal transmission by convection.

VACUPOR® vacuum insulation panels (VIP) produced in this way reduce overall thermal transmission to a quarter of its initial value. Altogether, it is possible to achieve very much higher efficiency than with conventional insulation materials such as mineral fibers, foams or inorganic insulation panels.

The thermal insulation value is < 0.005 W/m*K (measured at 22.5°C average temperature) and the technical approval by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) for our product VACUPOR® NT-B2-S quotes a rated value of 0.007 W/m*K.

The layer thickness of VACUPOR® VIPs is 4 to 10 times less than that of conventional systems. Weight is reduced by a factor of 2 to 15.

In the construction sector, VACUPOR® VIPs make it possible to obtain very effective results with enormously low insulation thickness and impressively small space requirement.

In existing housing stock, where there is insufficient space to carry out essential high-quality energy efficiency improvements, VACUPOR® VIPs are real problem-solvers.

Esthetic considerations also play a large part today, e.g. in low-energy houses (“passive houses”), where thin wall insulation allows slimmer walls and maximum light access. Vacuum panels are the ideal solution to meet these requirements.
